Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO)

Join Our Literary Group

What is ESO?

Epsilon Sigma Omicron began in 1928 at Indiana University through the Indiana Federation of Clubs and its Extension Division as an honorary reading society for clubwomen, not a college social sorority. It became a national sorority in 1930, held its first national meeting at the 1932 GFWC convention, and by the 1940s had been absorbed into the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) as part of its Education Department.

  • In California, ESO operates under the California Federation of Women’s Clubs (CFWC) as part of the Education & Libraries program. Members advance through reading levels (Pledge, Member, Star, Torch, Century) by reading from a variety of categories and submitting short book reports. The California motto is “Enlighten Thy Own Pathway,” and participation can be individual or through club reading groups.

At Beaumont Woman’s Club, we promote reading, achieving ESO levels, and fun social experiences. Please click below to contact me for more information.

What is the origin of the ESO Crest?

According to the General Federation of Women's Clubs ESO Handbook, Bertha J. Lacey, a well-known Indiana artist, designed the crest for ESO in the form of a shield, the ancient symbol of protection. The shield is divided into sections:

  • The center section represents the American home, with a pathway leading into the world of achievement.
  • In the top left section, the rising sun stands for enlightenment.
  • The palm leaf in the upper central section of the shield is the symbol of victory through effort.
  • The crescent moon at the upper right denotes enlightenment pursued in the nighttime hours of study.
  • The lower left section shows the lyre, which is the symbol for fine arts.
  • The wheat in the lower right symbolizes the idea that we reap what we sow.
  • The lower central section shows an open book, which represents all knowledge.
  •  Below the crest is the torsade bearing the name Epsilon Sigma Omicron. The torsade was originally a wreath of twisted ribbon presented to a crusader when he set out upon a quest.
  • The dove of peace, which crowns the crest, symbolizes aspiration.
